Kristen Stewart has certainly proven her acting chops over the years. And now, she’s set to take things to a new level as she prepares for a new role to play one of the most beloved people in recent history.
Playing Royalty
Stewart has reportedly been chosen to play the late Princess Diana in an upcoming drama titled ‘Spencer’. The movie would chronicle one fateful weekend in the ‘90s when the Princess of Wales accepts that her marriage with Prince Charles is no longer working and that she wouldn’t be able to become the Queen of England.
Neon, the production company behind the Oscar-winning film ‘Parasite’, bought the right to the upcoming movie. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2021.
There’s no word yet about when the film would be released.
Real to Reel
Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín will head the project. Given his track record in directing films about other historical figures, expectations are high that ‘Spencer’ would live up to his other works.
In 2016, he directed actress Natalie Portman in the biographical drama ‘Jackie’, which told the story of former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy after the assassination of her husband. The same year saw Larraín release the film ‘Neruda’, which chronicled the political career of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda as portrayed by actor Gael Garcia Bernal.
Larraín seems to be very confident in his lead actress and described Stewart as ‘one of the great actors around today. Stewart herself has played other historical figures in the past.
Just last year, she portrayed French New Wave icon, Jean Seberg, in a drama thriller film directed by Benedict Andrews. Earlier in her career, she appeared as rockstar Joan Jett in the film, ‘The Runaways’.
The Internet Reacts
As can be expected, people online had a lot to say about Stewart’s casting as Princess Diana.
There were those who criticized the decision and said that the 30-year-old actress wasn’t a good fit for the role. Netizens dissed Stewart for her alleged lack of natural charm and called back to her Twilight days acting skills.
Meanwhile, there were those who expressed excitement for the upcoming film and Stewart’s casting. Fans of the actress also praised her and former on-screen love interest Robert Pattinson’s career come ups.
Pattinson recently nabbed the coveted role of Batman and is set to appear in a high budget solo feature.
